After way too much time spent trying to get Google Photos and Apple Photos to play nice, I’m finally ready to share some of the photos from our trip to Savannah last month. I could summarize the days spent there in just a few words (delightful, relaxing, warm, lovely) but I will try to elaborate just a little bit more.

Day One

We arrived on a Monday afternoon and after checking in at our VRBO apartment (great location, comfortable, private) we decided to go for a walk so we headed toward Forsyth Park. I shared pictures of that last time so there’s just one here. The weather was perfect the whole time and my Fitbit was happy to see so many steps recorded all week.

Day Two

We started day two with a visit to Bonaventure Cemetery. I have a little bit of a thing for shooting in cemeteries. This one was featured in the movie “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.” We found Jonny Mercer’s grave as we meandered our way through, admiring the oaks dripping in Spanish moss, the beautiful sculptures, and noticed stones on so many of the graves. I had to look up what that means: a permanent (as opposed to flowers) reminder that someone visited the grave.

On the way back we stopped at a roadside BBQ stand for lunch. We both got the ribs and chicken combo and realized pretty quickly that one combo would have been enough for both of us. I liked the ribs more and S liked the chicken more so one would have been perfect (turns out he likes his chicken a little on the dry and over-cooked side 🙂 ).

After lunch, we went for another walk to explore the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. I took the opportunity to say a silent prayer for a friend in need. Even though it’s been years since I attended church on a regular basis and even longer since my first communion in a Catholic church, fragments of prayers (in Spanish) came back to me as I sat in one of the pews.

Day Three

Day three was my birthday. I slept in and when I wandered into the living room I found myself alone. After a little while, the doorbell rang and when I opened it, there was S, with a big bouquet of flowers. I wish I could have seen him walking the streets of Savannah with that vase of flowers. Our main excursion that day was to Wormsloe Plantation. The big attraction there is the entrance, lined by over 400 beautiful live oaks. And because of this, it is nearly impossible to get a picture without any other cars or people. Somehow S got lucky when he insisted on taking a picture of me.

On the way back into town we stopped for lunch and when I saw a turkey Reuben on the menu I decided to get it in honor of my dad. He loved a good Reuben. This one was pretty good, and the fries were amazing. We ended the day with dinner out (seafood — sorry no pics) and then a stop for a nightcap and dessert. It was a wonderful birthday.

Day Four

We went to the beach for our last day. We debated whether to wear our bathing suits but decided it wasn’t going to be that warm. Turns out it was pretty darn warm. It was very windy though so I didn’t feel my skin burning as I sat on the beach with my book. We had a late lunch (seafood again of course) and paid a visit to the gators before heading back into town.

Our last adventure was a walking ghost tour. We heard about duels, murders, and more about the story behind the “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil” book and movie. It was the perfect way to end our stay in Savannah.

I’ve decided I want to do this again next year. Everyone needs something to look forward to every year, and a trip is perfect. Even more perfect if it’s on your birthday. Not sure though if it’s going to be Savannah again. I love this city, but it might be time to explore another location. Budget is one of the primary factors though and being able to drive there is a plus. But there are so many places I haven’t been to yet! Good thing I have almost a year to figure out the next destination.
