The Sunday Post: Shooting for the Stars

Last Sunday I found a website that generates random photos. These photos are from various sources, but they’re free to use, and are intended to provide a little artistic or writing inspiration. This is the photo that caught my eye:

I wrote a story, a very short story, inspired by this dog, imagining what he’s doing in front of these doors. I intended to post this story right here, but the more I worked on it, the more I liked it, and the more I wondered: Should I try? Could I get it published somewhere? What do I have to lose?

So this morning I went for it and submitted it to The New Yorker for their “Shouts & Murmurs” section. Shoot for the stars, right? Chances are super-slim that anyone will read beyond the first sentence, never mind actually publish it. But I had a good time working on it, and it would be nice to see it printed somewhere. If I don’t hear anything in a few months I will go ahead and share it here. If you’re really curious and want to read it, let me know and I will share a copy by email.

I might go back to poetry this week. I have a format I want to try but haven’t found the right subject yet. Maybe another photo will give me some new inspiration.

Have a good week! Hope you find something that inspires you in some way.
